The community of Balsam is starting to take shape. Amazon is an amazing place to get plaster cloth in all shapes and sizes. I elected to use 4” strips of plaster bandage for the ease of shaping. I have plenty more to do to hide the cardboard weave underneath the plaster cloth. After scenery is roughed in with plaster I will start to get serious…

A couple of weeks ago now I revised the layout plan to remove the need for a helix and all of the associated intricacies. The layout is now a “nolix”. There is a 4.3% grade around the turnback, which while steep, will provide plenty of operational challenges, including doubling the hill. The actual grade on this section of line was near 5%.

This layout plan is currently just a draft of the Murphy branch from the yard/roundhouse in Asheville, NC to the town of Sylva. It is a two level layout that is “unstacked” but the layers are placed directly against eachother to save space. It will be built modularly and likely with handlaid track on everythign but the helix.
