Anyone here well versed in 3D printing? I’m looking to get a 3D printer with the hopes of printing some N Scale detail parts and possibly some buildings but I have no idea what I need. I was looking at the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra 16K as an option as it seems to be very high fidelity but I’m not sure if this is overkill or simply not the right product.

I’m only a beginner with my own 3d printing but I have an Ender 3 Pro which works great and wasnt too expensive. It takes some tweaking for each print for sure and understanding how best to print each model. I’ve test printed a model I did of my own house.

You can see the detail limitations my printer has but its fine for my budget. 😉

@Tonybolony73 Awesome! Thanks for the input. I’ve heard there’s a bit of a learning curve, hopefully nothing too crazy though. Your house looks like it came out pretty good!

I haven’t done any 3D printing for model railway things yet, but in my work I’ve had to work with various tools across the journey and done some stuff for tabletop gaming. I don’t know about the Elegoo series specifically but for N Scale you would be better suited with a resin printer to get the finer details in the prints at the smaller scales, FDM has closed the gap but resin is still king of the detail especially with smaller prints. Just be aware though they have a tendency to be much more involved than a FDM extrusion printer with the curing and cleaning process. You’ll need a dedicated space to fully set up as the resin prints can be rather messy and the smell isn’t great to be around for extended periods of time (have a fan to circulate air and preferably an extraction system to vent air outside). You’ll definitely want compressed air (either in cans or from a compressor for the airbrush or larger compressor if you happen to have one!) to wash away the isopropyl after a wash cycle.

I reckon @Jimmy_DIY has a video or two kicking around on his YouTube channel about his adventures with N Scale 3D printing.

@ScottyB Thanks! This is good info. The Saturn printer I’m looking at is a resin printer, I’m just not sure if it’s overkill for N scale ya know. I’ll check out Jimmy’s channel đŸ™‚

I have a just opened Mars 5 Ultra. The experiments start tomorrow! Been doing filament printing for 7 years, for work, but wanted the extra detail. Fingers crossed.
