Spray paint will melt foam and an oil based paint will make your life a nightmare with anything you try to glue to it. For painting foam you can just use cheap craft paint to save some money. Latex paint should also be fine but obviously don’t use anything with gloss.

Personally I would avoid any “mud” colors only because I personally think they stand out too much. Using a dark earth color helps keep any bald spots from becoming too obvious.
