• 🚂What should we improve at Model Train Media

      Hey guys Oscar here,

I have been thinking about a few different ideas to improve Model Train Media. First of all I really want to thank you for all the support so far. I really hope we can keep growing and make sure that the platform will have more posts each day!

When there is sufficient funds my next goal for the platform is really a app. I hope this can improve the mobile user experience and boost the activity.

I wanted to share this poll with the community to find out what you guys would like to see on Model Train Media. Let me know what you think that I should focus on so I can listen to you.

Like I always told the hobbyists are in charge of the platform so I really look forward to seeing your ideas and feedback.

      Greetings Oscar

      • I’d be curious to know what “More posting challenges” entails? Without a bit of clarity on that the first thing that comes to mind is using the knowledge from the community to write some articles that are compilation guides. For example, “The Community’s Guide to DCC” where everyone shares their tips and tricks and compiles a one-stop shop for both new members and people searching online for beginners guides to DCC wiring.

        • @ScottyB Hi Scotty,

I am actually referring to things like layout contests or series of posting your coolest locomotive. Such types of posting challenges to really get people to share their own trains.

But I really like your idea that has not crossed my mind yet. I think it would be awesome if we can write articles with the help of the community.

I am also thinking about searching for people who like to write some train articles for this platform. I will look into that aswell.

Thanks for your idea I will look into it!

          Greetings Oscar

ah yeah I see, some challenges have been on the mind from a post a couple of months back and would definitely help to get people engaged!

One should be a beginner’s layout challenge where the community put together a suite of beginner track plans that can go into a blog post (it’s a two-for-one!) Participants provide a layout plan and a short description of the operational aspects to help give newbies some inspiration.

        • I think it would be cool to have a section where you could post real train / prototype photos and videos, since railfanning is closely related to model railroading. I think you would also need a way to filter that content on / off though so as a user you could see it or not if you wanted to.

Also, I would suggest investing in the website and increasing speed. I’ve noticed a little bit of lag time when loading more posts or saving a reaction, etc, which can probably be solved by either optimizing your code or increasing resources available such as servers, etc. It’s not really that much of an issue now but might start to become a bigger issue as you grow.

          • @BMR777 That is actually a good idea aswell, now people can already create their own group to share pictures also of normal trains but I will try to add a topic to the topic list.

I am already in the process of upgrading my hosting capacities so I hope when that is finished that it will increase site speed.

Because I have almost no income out of the platform I am really balancing between keeping the costs reasonable and getting the best performance possible.

But if you do experience problems please let me know because as long as I dont know that they are there I cannot fix them!

Thanks a lot for your ideas and feedback I will dive a bit into the performance part.

            Greetings Oscar
