DCC has arrived on the Magic City Sub
A few weeks back, I decided I was tired of running club equipment at the club layout and decided to get my own DCC stuff. Up to this point, all my locomotives were standard DC. That would soon change.
I selected 2 of my favorite locomotives—A BN SD40-2 and a BNSF SD70ACe, both Kato—to be upgraded first. I ordered TCS K1D4 decoders. The decoder fit into the SD40 like a charm. The SD70 was a different story. For some reason, the decoder doesnt fit correctly and cannot get contact from the chassis. So, my BNSF ES44AC (also Kato) got the decoder instead.
In addition to the 2 non-sound locomotives, I purchased one I’d been looking at for a long time. A Broadway Limited Imports Paragon 4 ES44AC dressed in a fantasy Great Northern scheme. I’m a sucker for GN, so I’s been wanting this loco for a long time, and finally decided to pull the plug.
I managed to get an NCE Powercab off eBay for $125 ($80 cheaper than if I’d purchased it new from a retailer), and DCC on my layout went from a dream to a reality.
The Powercab was extremely easy to install using my existing wiring setup, and I was running trains in no time.
Eventually, I will be upgrading the rest of my fleet to DCC, but for now I just have the 3 locos.
