I finally managed to track down a very hard to find model in a place I never expected to find it in.
In 2015, Norfolk Southern restored SD40 3170 to it’s original Southern Railway scheme. It was later donated to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga TN where it can be found today.
This was the very first SD40 built for the Southern Railway.Athearn made this model of the 3170 was Tsunami 2 DCC and sound sometime around 2016 or so.
Since getting back into HO in 2021, finding the 3170 has been a priority…but I’ve had no luck finding one.
That all changed last week when I was browsing Rails of Sheffield in their used section (just for fun!). Imagine my shock and surprise when 3170 appeared on my screen!
I haven’t placed an order so fast on my life!It arrived all the way from the UK today to my front door in Georgia (USA).
Though it was pricey thanks to the darn tariffs, it was still worth it to add a very rare model to my collection. One that I’ve enjoyed seeing in person both in service on NS and later in preservation at the museum.O.T, Johnbooru and 7 others3 Comments-

always great to find a rare model, especially one that really means something to you. It should look great on your layout, enjoy.

@RobsTrains Thanks! I do have a think of wanting models of trains I’ve seen in real life. I’ve got a handful of models that either were in the Museum’s collection or are still today.

@ravenhawk6910 I would like to get the chance to see more American trains in person, but it is a bit of a trip from New Zealand. It’s easier to model American than New Zealand trains as there is limited kits available for NZ trains.
