This is an HO scale Hallmark E7A I’ve retrofitted with a complete Proto 2000 drive.

The original trucks were having hardware issues, and the motor seemed to be giving out. I checked against some parts I got from a friend and found out it all lined up.

So with some new custom bolsters and wiring, the Proto drive has been fitted to the brass skateboard. The drive shaft angles are a bit egregious because the motor sits on top of the frame, not inside it, but that can only be solved with a different motor.

It’s a quiet runner so far, and ran great when pulled without gears behind my Proto 2000 E8A.

Once I have the budget for a decoder, it’ll get fully kitted out. Plus I have its partner locomotive that needs the same treatment.

Very Smart! These are unique E units but those 1980s drives are outdated!

@BrassBasement.com I’m sure they were top of the line in 1975, but age and possible water damage has certainly weakened them. I’m hoping I can retrofit more locomotives this way to keep my old brass stuff going.
