As part of the 90th anniversary of the National Model Railroad Association several organizations have been throwing in their show of support and celebration. At my model railroad club, the Tennessee Valley Model Railroaders Inc., we wished to find some way to take part in the celebration ourselves.
The wheels started turning in my head and I happened to remember an old billboard sitting besides the tracks in Lancing, TN on our layout. It was a old piece that had been recovered from the now demolished layout at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel so it needed some TLC to smarten it up.

I took it home and removed the old board from the frame and made a simple sign in Microsoft Word using both our logo and the NMRA 90th logo. A couple of test prints got me to the correct size.
I then painted the base with the same brown latex roofing paint I use on my home layout, covered it up with Woodland Scenics burnt grass fine turf and sprayed it with Scenic Cement to lock it in place.

After all of that dried I came over it again with a coat of white Elmers school glue, thinning spread out, and applied static grass to the bottom of the sign. This was my first time adding static grass to something this small and I think the results are pretty good.

I then printed the final result and taped it into the billboard, here is the final result back in it’s old location in Lancing, TN.
