I don’t know to many people in this hobby who don’t like owning models of trains they remember seeing in real life and I am certainly no exception.
While I do have a models I’ve seen locally, I also enjoy collecting models I have seen in my various travels across the U.S.A.

Two of my favorite ones are pictured here. First up is Union Pacific E8A number 942. Built new for the UP in 1953 by EMD it enjoyed a lengthy career in passenger service for that road before ending up in Chicago, Illinois in commuter service for the C&NW/Metra as their number 510.
The unit was acquired by the (then) Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California. in 1997. In 2012 it debuted in fresh Armor Yellow and Harbour Mist Gray, making it the only restored E unit outside of UP’s executive E9’s to wear the scheme. It can be seen today pulling trains at the (now called) Southern California Railway Museum in Perris.

This model was made by Rapido Trains Inc. Fun fact, Rapido used the real 942 to obtain lazar 3D scans of the whole unit which were then used to make the scale dimensions for producing the models.
I bought the model as I have seen the 942 in person at the museum during January 2020.

Next up is Los Angeles Junction Railway CF7 2571. Built new for the Santa Fe Railway as an EMD F7A (#202L) in 1949, it was rebuilt into a CF7 at the railroad’s Cleburne, Texas shops in 1972. At some point it was transferred to Santa Fe subsidiary, the Los Angeles Junction Railway, where it remained in service well into the days of BNSF Railway. In 2012 it was retired and donated to the Oklahoma Railway Museum in Oklahoma City. Once there it was repainted back into it’s Santa Fe colors.

The model of 2571 seen here is a heavily customized Rail Power Products shell on an Overland Models drive. I found this at a train show and bought it after realizing it was the same unit I saw in person in 2017 on my trip out there. It’s just DC, but one day I will get around to converting it to DCC and sound.

I went to the Spencer NC train show earlier this year, and came home with models of two locomotives I saw that day. Southern GP30 #2601 at the museum, and one of the NCDOT F59PHI used for the Piedmont.

Nice locomotives! I had never heard of Sante Fe’s LAJ or seen that livery, which I guess is the Sante Fe blue/yellow scheme and they repainted the side blue for the LAJ?
