I’ve got lots of favorites, to many to list off. But the one that has been the greatest to see in person every time I see it is the Queen of Southern Railway steam herself. I’m of course referring to none other than Southern Railway 2-8-2 number 4501.
When I was a child it had already had a storied career on the Southern and Norfolk Southern as an excursion star, but when the program ended in 1994 and it’s boiler certificate expired in 1998 it was retired from service. And at that time it was generally excepted that the locomotive would never run again.
But then in 2010 with the beginning of Norfolk Southern’s 21st Century Steam Program, the locomotive was restored to operating condition between 2010 and 2014. It ran some trips on the mainline before the programed concluded and today operates at it’s home, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum on many of the museum’s trips both on property and down to Georgia to Summerville.
Since it came back to steam in 2014 I have done the best I can to see it run as much as I can.
This photo here was taken by me and is from 2024 as the engine prepared to depart from Grand Junction for a trip to Summerville.
