Hi everyone,
I have somehow become the DCC guy at the store. I am getting to be proficient doing installations and using the LokProgrammer to get the sounds and the NCE for addressing and resetting decoders, etc. What I am lacking in is the more advanced programing. I have a customer who would like his headlights to dim for “rule 17”. Does anyone know which CV on an ESU V5 that is, and what the setting is?
Thanks!

Rule 17 dictates that headlights should be dimmed when the locomotive is stopped, at a station, or moving within a yard. When the locomotive begins to move, the headlight in the direction of travel should brighten, while the rear headlight should dim or go out.
The ESU manual page 32 to 36 mentions “rule 17”:
https://www.esu.eu/uploads/tx_esudownloads/524xx_LokSound_V35_ESUKG_US_Betriebsanleitung_Auflage_IV_ebook_01.pdfAccording to Google AI the steps to Configure Rule 17 Dimming is
1. Enter Programming Mode:
Place your ESU LokSound decoder-equipped locomotive on the programming track or use a “main track” programming mode if available on your DCC system.
2. Set the Index Register:
Set CV 31 to 16.
Set CV 32 to 0.
3. Enable Rule 17:
For the front headlight, set CV 263 to 4 (which adds the bit for Rule 17 Forward).
For the rear headlight, set CV 271 to 8 (which adds the bit for Rule 17 Rear).
Some documentation suggests adding 128 to these values (e.g., CV 263 = 132) to enable “LED mode” for dimming.
4. Test the Configuration:
Run the locomotive to see if the headlights dim when the locomotive is stopped and brighten in the direction of travel, as per Rule 17.
I have not tried this, so I do not know how accurate the description is. I hope you are successful in setting it up! Good luck.

@Andrew No problem – please let us know if it worked and we can store it in our collective memory of stuff to remember.
