Question for those who have been there: im about to start scenery on my layout and i have the 2” pink foam board as a base, what would a good color be to paint the base before adding vegetation? Im modeling late summer/early fall west virginia around the 1940’s 50’s if that helps. Thanks in advance, ill hang up and listen now.

I would go with any dark earthy color; black, dark green, very dark brown, etc, I think any of those would work best. Personally I would avoid any “mud” colors only because I personally think they stand out too much. Using a dark earth color helps keep any bald spots from becoming too obvious.

@ApproachMedium any specific type? Like acrylic or otherwise? From what I’ve read it seems acrylic is the go to, but this is my first attempt

@SpartanFan517 Definitely stick with acrylic. Spray paint will melt foam and an oil based paint will make your life a nightmare with anything you try to glue to it. For painting foam you can just use cheap craft paint to save some money. Latex paint should also be fine but obviously don’t use anything with gloss.

I usually take a look for oops paints at the big box stores, mostly browns. Also look online to see what the area looked like around the time you want to model, there should be some color pictures available.

You can use some mismatched latex paint that the big box stores sell or small bottles of craft paint. Something I’ve recently discovered is Vallejo ground paint. It’s about the consistency of cake frosting and it has a nice texture to it

Personally i used an earth coloured latex paint from the hardware store. They sell inexpensive sample sizes { pint or similiar } . That will seal everything. As you progress depending on what you model you can paint over for effect. Maybe a light green yellow mixture before laying simulated grass turf. Have fun , whatever you choose can’t be wrong and is easily changed.

Take a look at what the soil of the area looks like. Is there red clay? Sandy soil? Dark loam? Are you thinking of modeling dry soil, just after a rain and there would be puddles? My best recommendation is not to go too dark, as ultimately it will show through the ground cover in places.
