When I originally planned the current layout, I did it to make it as simple to build as possible, having previously had several false starts where I had mad the scenery too complex and therefore never got the layout finished before moving. This time I went for a mainly flat layout, so that track could be laid quickly, so that trains could be run from early stage, and then built the scenery around it over time. However, having run the layout for several years, I wanted to take some of the flatness away, so I decided to add some small relief to one section. The photos show before the start, then making templates to cut the card, using the cut card to give the relief or elevation, checking the overhang clearance with the largest wagon, and then covering with crepe paper. The next stage will be painting a base colour before covering with various scatter material.

It looks great, I also struggled with the flat look of my old layout. I think you did a great improvement!
