• Walthers CV Codes

Hello all, I recently purchased a Walthers Mainline Amtrak California with ESU Sound and DCC, and I’m new to DCC, looking to learn a bit more about CV Codes and fine tuning the locomotive; I have a Bachmann EMD SD40-2 with DCC that I successfully changed CV’s to slow the acceleration rate, which was more like a slot car than a locomotive .

I have the Walthers CV codes that came with the locomotive, just looking for feedback from more experienced DCC users. Also, I have learned that CV8=8 is your friend😂 ask me how I know…

      • Nice! DCC is pretty straight forward once you get the hang of it, probably like most things, time on task helps greatly. ESU, while much more flexible than say Soundtraxx Tsunami2 (and some argue better sounding), the ESU configuration can be a bit more complex for some. Most of my locos have the Tsunami2 or Blunami from Soundtraxx but more of the manufacturers (Rapido, Scaletrains, etc… )are utilizing ESU LokSound. A lot of good videos out on Youtube for ESU Loksound overview, configuration, etc…

        • Thanks @zak98, for the great feedback, which is exactly what I have been reading during my research. I understand ESU Loksound offers savvy operators to tweak and fine-tune, which is great. I have a few BLI locomotives with Paragon 4, they sound pretty good.
I have yet to upgrade a few DCC-ready locomotives I have, so I am checking out Soundtraxx as a starting point.
          Thanks again, happy railroading!

Update: I located the Walthers Instructions / Quick Start page and used my Digitrax Zephyr to read and re-program several CV’s that were not set to factory default in a few areas which Walthers did not have properly set from the factory, and now I have the locomotive running much smoother; I successfully reduced the locomotive’s deceleration rate and improved braking stopping distance. 😎 To quote Obi-Wan Kenobi: to Luke Skywalker: “You have taken your first steps into a larger world.”
