• Kit builds - Coal Cars and a Building

      Hello Friend!

This weekend I hit the local NTRAK club’s display and a few modules really inspired me to model.

On my way home I swung by the hobby shop and picked up Woodland’s Scenics B92 Mine Run Coal to finish the Southern Railway coal hopper car kits! I modified the stock plastic coal load by sanding the ends so it sat deeper in the car and then piled the coal load on top, using Scenic Cement to secure it. Modified the car numbers with acrylic paint to create unique numbers and finished with weathering powders, what do you think?

I’m currently working on adding the coal loads to the smaller offset hopper cars because of the realism it offers; see picture for comparison. Left: stock Athearn load, Middle: Woodland’s B92 load, Right: stock Bluford Shops load.

I want the load removable on these smaller cars. Thus, I placed a piece of saran wrap inside the car to create a barrier between the car and the load. Now the load is more realistic and removable! I plan to add a small magnet to the underside of the load to make removal easier, like Rapido Trains does on their coal loads!

I completed one building kit from Woodland Scenics. The combination of black trim on light yellow was a chore, no word of a lie, but I love the result. The asphalt roof is the same coal load that I crushed into a fine dust.
