Having a Plast!
Been foam carving and working with plaster the last few weeks. This is my first experience with plaster since intermediate school! I used Sculptamold to blend the foam chunks of the mountain. I believe I captured the feel of the Appalachian mountains just right, can’t wait to see it with trees! The mountain access panel was a chore; while plastering the mountain I used a thin sheet of tin in the gap to maintain separation from the mountain. I think I’ll be able to camouflage the gap with scenery no problem, success!
I used Hydrocal by the roundhouse. I used zip lock bags like a pastry bag, mixed the plaster a little more wet than the instructions, cut a small corner off the bag, squeezed into the tight spaces and let gravity self-level. No turning back now…
My next planned project is to mill some more cherry to complete the shelf on the front of the layout. I saw an article in N Scale magazine of a father/son that would enter their layout into competitions in the 80’s/90’s, and I thought if I were to ever display my layout outside of the home, then having the shelf on the front would interfere with the viewing experience / kiddos would pull themselves up on it. Thus, I am going to design a shelf that can mount to the front or the back and have all the wiring on quick disconnects. Not sure if it’ll ever go mobile, but now’s the time to plan for it.
Thanks for your interest, enjoy your day!
