Trains in the Attic
I moved from New York to a small town in Vermont in 2021. I brought with me model trains I hadn’t touched in years, hoping that the attic of our new house would be the spot to build a layout. Five years later, I finally got rid of the moving boxes and had enough space to start a layout. It’s not huge – about 15 x 12. Since I had knee replacement surgery in 2024, limiting my ability to kneel and crawl under the layout, I built the tables high so I could wire up the layout using a mechanic’s creeper. Trains are running finally and I’m sprucing up the buildings and scenery. I started building the layout in one of the coldest winters Vermont has seen and the unheated attic was a test of my stamina and gloves. It’s an O-gauge layout, running old Lionel and MTH trains. This has becoming such an expensive hobby, so I’ve been buying a lot of buildings and trains on e-bay. It’s funny how trains attract more trains! Since I built the layout, several friends have given me their HO and N engines and trains. I hope to build a smaller layout for my grandkids using those smaller trains. Layout pictures coming soon. Looking to learn so much from the great people here!
