• After being away from the hobby for a while, I forgot how time intensive it can be. I’m working on a 4ft by 2ft HO layout diorama to practice my scenery skills. I set out to ballast a 4ft section of track, one and a half hours later only had half of it ballasted and glued. Had to stop because I ran out of daylight and the room was getting dark.

Been working on my diorama for the past few months now and it feels like every time I make progress I see something else I have to do before I move on to the next step.

Model railroading is a fun hobby but I forgot how much time you can put into it doing simple things.

      • Yes, one could spend every spare minute working on it, there’s always something to do (or re-do). That makes it a great hobby, it’s never finished.

      • But ballasting is one of the most tedious parts of it.

        • @NScale_Doug I remember ballasting not being so tedious. I used isopropyl alcohol for the first time which added a new step to the process for me. I’m hoping this time the ballast dries solid, on past layouts there would always be weak parts after it dried where it would clump off.

        • It’s definitely time consuming but I always focus on the journey, not the destination. I haven’t run trains in months because of track painting/detailing but I know it’ll be worth the wait:)
