Roads... how do I do them right?
Hey, guys.
Me and my grandfather were discussing roads for his layout. He’s part of the 33%ers, so he doesn’t really want anything too advanced. We were thinking cardboard glued down to the foam and then painted gray with weathering. We also wanted to add a sidewalk to cover up the ugly “waffling” inside the cardboard. (HO and O scale)
Does anyone know of any other ways to do it? We need something cheap and easy to do.
Thanks, AstroKnight 👾

You can get a container of Plaster of Paris for a few dollars and you’ll not only have material for roads, but also rock faces and other scenic elements too.

I actually do not have a lot of experience in building roads, I did create the roads on my N scale Noch preformed layout by just painting the flat surface nicely grey and that actually turned out pretty good.
So I think just painting cardbord would turn out nice!
I also saw someone doing something with sanding paper I do not really know how they did it but that also looked nice when I saw it.
Maybe other people also have some more tips!
Greetings Oscar

Woodland Scenics Paving Tape, tub of pre-mixed drywall mud (All-Purpose Joint Compound), and a wide putty knife or drywall taping knife. Place the tape along the edge of where you want roads, parking lots, etc. Fill in with joint compound. Screed smooth. Depending on your screeding abilities you might need to lightly sand smooth after the joint compound dries. Remove tape, and paint. If you want to go inexpensive on paint, get craft paint at Wally World or similar stores. Oh, and the joint compound can also be used to fix those oops in the walls around the house.

Jimmy of DYI and Digital has a video where he uses a plastic FOR SALE or other sign. Cut it to the size needed, paint it black or gray or whatever you want the road to look like, glue it in place. I have some plaster roads but plan to use this method for roads and parking lots in my village.
