• Rule about generative ai?

First of all, thank you for making this platform!!

I would suggest a rule against generative AI.

Personally i really dislike gen ai, especially in the modeltrain community, because for me its all about creativity and doing stuff yourself, so having fake images on the platform feels kinda disrespectful of the community to me.

(not to mention how gen ai is violently destroying the planet, stealing from artists and poisoning political discourse)

Theres alot of awesome photographers in the community, and taking good photos is easier than ever considering how good smartphone cameras have gotten.

Ive also seen some gen ai images in the branding of the platform and find that pretty dissapointing to be honest.

Obviously im not the end it be all of opinions, but id appreciate it if people would give this a thought and share their perspective on the topic

      • Hey Eevee,

I actually agree with you I am also not a big fan of ai images. The reason why I sometimes used it is because i’ve build this whole platform by myself and I cannot always use pictures of others. Then it can be a nice escape to make sure that there is something visible but I agree with you that it should not be part of the community.

        I will look into it!

        Kind regards,

        Oscar

        • I agree that we should be avoiding GenAI. I prefer to see the real world, physical creations or the process that went into the digital asset (things like 3D models for digital rail or 3D Printing). Legend lore (like maps) and digital track plans aside as they are part and parcel of the model railway process. I’d started using GenAI to generate inspirational material, however as the implications became clear I have reverted to traditional methods of inspiration gathering.

agree as well, in general for this platform. i think the effort to create a model rr. scene, model, layout teaches, encourages, frustrates and yea costs money. it is a bit messy, like us and life! 🙂 AI in general and its thirst for electric power is going to be a big challenge (is) as Data Centers supporting AI are (will be) everywhere. They are not the most friendly of neighbors to have next door due to just what they are, how they work, and what they contain. anyway… off topic, apologies! great original post and fully support that effort.
