• Caledonian class 812 no.9 & 10 'Donald & Douglas'

Happy Hogmanay! To celebrate here’s Scotland’s most famous steam locomotives from children’s literature.

These two are kitbashed from the Lima O scale class 4F models and were the result of a brainwave when I started having a hyperfixation on O scale again recently.

The models have been given added features such as sandboxes, wingplates, cut-down tenders, extended chimneys, guitar string handrails, cylinder hatches on the front smokebox as well as the necessary front and back details for the engines to operate on the UK rail system of the steam era.

The chassis remains pretty much unchanged. I wanted to balance the mix of TVS and RWS astetics which is why in some places the detail is plain, which is where the chassis falls in. Compared to the extra details like lids for the sandboxes, a more detailed hatch, lampirons and brake pipes.

The big wraparound handrail is an Ernie Bull guitar string and the faces are from the Golden Bear My First Thomas range, exactly the faces for their respected characters, however the eyebrows are repainted to match the look of each twin.

The tenders are the original fowler tenders but cut down in height to match the twin’s tenders, retaining the original coal load and custom made raves and other adjustments to match the design. I left the fireboxes as they were, because I didnt want to go through the trouble of modifying those, and I didn’t really care. The models have been spray painted black with Citadel’s CHAOS BLACK! and the buffer beams, lining and numbers were all hand painted. The nameplates however are printed pieces which I designed in Clip Studio.

So there you go, now you know why I injured myself a while ago with a hacksaw.
      Happy Hogmanay Scotland!
