AT&SF box car weathered for 1970 layout (30 yrs. on the rails). Used acrylics & powders. The roof was painted silver with subsequent layering of raw & burnt sienna to get a three-dimensional effect. The car was cheap ($5) so I experimented a lot with this one.

Not great lighting, but I think this was the best of the bunch I weathered. Stock photo for comparison.

I regretfully let this one go some years ago. The Hornby Northern 153 was a very good and solid model.

I wanted a heavier build up of dirt on these as the loco scene can still tend towards the reasonably clean side. Freight locos go longer between washes and are ideal inspiration.

A loco my friend owns and had sent interstate to have weathered. A fantastic job, but I believe the weatherer no longer does this scale.

Carbolic acid wagons accumulate rust in the harsh environment. Discolouration is a regular occurance.

Cement wagons accumulate dust where the loading and unloading takes place. The nature of such loads means cleaning is near impossible without a full refresh.

Diesel-hydraulics are always a good go to when you want a heavier set of colours on your locos.
The DD54 is a classic example of early tech getting coated in oil and soot.

I’m just getting started with weathering my rolling stock and am looking for inspiration. Show me stuff you’ve weathered!
