Murphy Branch East
Four months ago, I embarked on a journey to build the eastern reaches of the Murphy Branch in North Carolina. The modelled portion of the line will run from Waynesville, NC to Sylva, NC and will include the Balsam Grade. The selected era is 1945-1953, and will feature steam and streamlined diesels.

Murphy Branch East
The community of Balsam is starting to take shape. Amazon is an amazing place to get plaster cloth in all shapes and sizes. I elected to use 4” strips of plaster bandage for the ease of shaping. The top deck is nearly complete! This will reach from Asheville yard and Roundhouse to the top of the Balsam Grade. There is nearly 40 feet of benchwork on the top deck and an equal amount that will go on the bottom.

More benchwork is prepared for the beginning stages of planning. After the holidays I really will hit the ground running with the benchwork.

As the winter sets in, I have started working on the benchwork for the Eastern Murphy Branch Layout. These panels will form the benchwork for Waynesville and Balsam. The total length of the layout is 20ft. These panels are light enough that I can maneuver them by myself even at 4’x18”.

Eastern Murphy Branch Layout Update
A couple of weeks ago now I revised the layout plan to remove the need for a helix and all of the associated intricacies. The layout is now a “nolix”. There is a 4.3% grade around the turnback, which while steep, will provide plenty of operational challenges, including doubling the hill. The actual grade on this section of line was near 5%.

SOU “Murphy Branch” (East)
I have officially started my new layout. I have plans to build a pretty extensive layout spanning from Asheville, NC to Sylva, NC on the Southern’s Murphy Branch. I have all the rail laid and powered up in my condensed version of the Asheville Roundhouse near Murphy Junction.
